Well i guess there isn’t really anything you can do, you did the right thing and told him the truth, he has to respect that. I know other people would have kept him in the grey by keeping him guessing which sucks.
I guess you should just talk to him normally as friends like you said you would and try forget the other stuff. He should get over it pretty quick if there was never anything there in the first place.
Don’t over think things and worry about it, there is nothing else you can really do.
